Lebanon: Israel strikes historic eastern city of Baalbek after evacuation call
The Israeli military has launched heavy air strikes on the ancient city of Baalbek in eastern Lebanon.
It follows a forced evacuation order given to the population earlier on Wednesday.
Baalbek Mayor Mustafa al-Shall confirmed strikes hit the city and its surroundings, state media said “Enemy warplanes launched a series of strikes on the al-Asira area of the city of Baalbek” and in a nearby town.
The city’s people were ordered to leave the city or risk being bombed, including at the site of its three-thousand-year-old Roman ruins. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to some of the world’s best-preserved Roman temples.
