Tehran attacks US base in Qatar, hours later Trump states Israel-Iran truce
Just hours before Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire, Iran has launched a missile attack on the Al Udeid air base in Qatar, home to the largest US military presence in the Middle East. The unprecedented strike on a neighbouring country with close ties to Tehran comes in retaliation for American bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities. While most missiles were intercepted over Doha, the attack has drawn strong condemnation from Qatar, which called it a "blatant violation" of its sovereignty. The US and Qatar received prior warning, and no casualties were reported as most personnel had been evacuated. This calculated show of force by Iran, targeting a key US ally in the region, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Al Jazeera’s Behdad Mahichi reports from Doha, Qatar.
