Future of US nuclear power: Pivotal moment amid safety concerns
In the United States, there are 54 nuclear power plants, supplying 18.6% of electricity, and six in Canada, contributing 15%. The average age of US commercial nuclear reactors is 42 years, signalling a pivotal moment for the industry. Stagnation stems from cost and safety concerns, exacerbated by historical incidents like Three Mile Island, Chornobyl, and Fukushima. Amid climate urgency, both the Biden administration and Congress advocate for advancing next-gen nuclear plants, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs), touted for affordability and enhanced safety features. Despite enthusiasm, experts warn of inherent risks, emphasizing the industry’s vulnerability to mishaps. The future role of nuclear power in the energy transition remains uncertain.
