Analysis: Why did Israel raid Al Jazeera’s Ramallah bureau?
Mouin Rabbani, a non-resident fellow at the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, says the Israeli military’s decision to shut down Al Jazeera’s office in the occupied West Bank shows Israel “clearly has something very serious to hide”.
“It needs to be asked if Israel is trying to get certain people out of the way, in this case, journalists, because it has some kind of intent to conduct a potentially major operation in the West Bank,” Rabbani told Al Jazeera.
Israel’s repression of the media is “one of the oldest tricks in the book”, he added.
“In this particular case, if you don’t like the exposure of genocide in the context of an illegal occupation, you shoot the messenger.”
