Biden’s plan for the ‘day after’ amounts to half a Palestinian state on half of West Bank: Bishara

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara discussed the current dynamics surrounding the push for a ceasefire resolution at the United Nations Security Council. He highlighted that while Arab ambassadors advocate for a ceasefire, Washington’s stance prioritizes humanitarian pauses aimed at releasing Israeli captives and facilitating aid into Gaza. Additionally, he suggested that the Biden administration’s pursuit of a permanent ceasefire is contingent upon a comprehensive solution that encompasses a pathway to a two-state resolution and increased Arab, notably Saudi, normalization of relations with Israel. Bishara argued that despite these efforts, the prospect of a Palestinian state faces resistance from the Israeli government, compounded by the proliferation of illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

Further, Bishara predicted that due to these challenges, Palestinians may only realistically expect a compromised statehood, limited to half of the West Bank. He cast doubt on the feasibility of achieving a comprehensive resolution without ad-dressing the core issues of settlement expansion and Palestinian statehood. On the diplomatic front, Bishara noted the complex interplay between regional interests and international pressures, shaping the trajectory of negotiations and potential out-comes.
