Colombia protests: Mourning for victims of armed groups

Mourners in Bogota remember victims of post-peace deal violence. Policy enforcement poor; President Petro talks with armed groups. Colombia’s historic peace deal with FARC promised to end decades of civil conflict, but territories the government has failed to control have seen renewed violence, killing over 400 former rebel fighters and 1,100 community leaders since 2016. Afro-Colombians and indigenous people are the most affected. Despite policies and laws in place, enforcement has been poor and impunity high. President Gustavo Petro initiated talks with remaining armed groups, but results have been limited. The path to peace requires redistributing wealth and ending illegal business, making it a difficult but necessary journey.
