Scientists at Harvard’s Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory suggest the Sun may have had a sibling—nicknamed "Nemesis"—at birth. A new study proposes that all stars, including our Sun, are likely born in pairs. Using statistical models and observations of the Perseus molecular cloud, researchers found strong evidence for this binary birth theory. Though Nemesis is long lost in the Milky Way, it may have once played a role in shaping our solar system—possibly even influencing the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.
