El Salvador cracks down on gangs: Rights groups say innocent people are being targeted

In El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele announced the dismantling of gangs during Independence Day celebrations. He acknowledged progress but noted ongoing challenges in completely eradicating gang influence. The announcement sparked protests against the State of Emergency, which has led to over 80,000 arrests and allegations of rights violations. Since 2022, these emergency measures have faced criticism for suspending Constitutional rights and targeting critics. While crime rates have decreased, some Salvadorans feel they have exchanged one form of abuse for another.
