Fighting famine in Sudan: UN trucks carrying food aid enter Darfur region
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is visiting Sudan where the world’s worst humanitarian crisis is unfolding.
More than 9 million people have been displaced in the 14-month conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The World Food Programme says its trucks are in the Darfur region for only the third time in two months.
The convoys are rushing to get food supplies to 160,000 people, ahead of the start of the rainy season.
The UN says a third of Sudan’s population, 18 million people, are starving.
Leni Kinzli is the head of communications for the World Food Programme in Sudan.
She says while she is grateful that aid has entered Darfur- much more humanitarian assistance needs to enter.
