Astronomers have, for the first time, detected fluorine—an element vital for dental health—in a galaxy over 12 billion light-years away. Using the ALMA telescope in Chile, the team found hydrogen fluoride in the gas clouds of galaxy NGP–190387. The discovery points to Wolf–Rayet stars as key sources of fluorine, suggesting these massive, short-lived stars produce the element early in the universe. This breakthrough sheds light on the cosmic origins of elements essential to life on Earth.
