Gaza’s orphaned children are bearing the brunt of the war as relatives struggle to provide support
In Gaza, a grandmother mourns the loss of her daughter, recounting how she took her granddaughter to her mother’s grave, where the child recognized it as Aseel’s. The child, found with skull and facial fractures, constantly asks about her deceased family, all killed in a bombing. Another woman evacuated to search for her husband, only to be killed by the Israeli army, leaving behind four boys and a girl. Her sister, who cares for the children, describes their struggle for food and support. The children’s grandmother, unable to provide for them due to her age, hopes an agency will take them in, as she worries about their future after her passing.
The UN says at least 17,000 Palestinian children in Gaza have been orphaned or separated from their parents. Many are now being looked after by relatives.
Al Jazeera’s Bisan Owda reports from inside Gaza.
