In 2023, at least 11 listed Chinese companies were reportedly disclosed that their chairman had disappeared without notice. A number of Chinese business leaders have gone missing in recent years, including Alibaba boss Jack Ma.
The reasons behind these disappearances remain unclear, but they are part of a broader pattern of vanishing billionaires. Many are of the view that this is one of the ways that President Xi Jinping tightens his control over China’s economy.
