Hezbollah now ‘dealing with a very complex situation’
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati has condemned the attack on Saleh al-Arouri. The government for the past three months has been trying its best to avoid confrontation with Israel.
The situation in the south is alarming and it’s been in talks with Hezbollah not to take it a step further. Foreign mediators have been coming to Beirut – the French, the Americans, and other Western officials – to pressure the Lebanese government to establish a wall from confrontation.
Now the government has to deal with this assassination directly because it knows it will trigger a series of events, which it wants to contain as much as possible.
Hezbollah, meanwhile, is dealing with a very complex situation. The attack on al-Arouri happened in the centre of its command in southern Beirut. Hezbollah will have to carefully weigh its response. The fact is this attack is outside the so-called rules of engagement.
