During a televised debate US presidential candidate Donald Trump accused Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, of eating cats, dogs, and other household pets. He then moved on to threaten them with deportation. The resulting furor has upended life for Haitians fleeing gang violence in their home country, and echoed racist backlash aimed at other migrant communities in the US.
