How important to the US presidential election are planned Biden-Trump debates? | Inside Story
Breaking tradition in several ways.
US President Joe Biden has challenged his predecessor to two televised debates ahead of the elections in November.
And Donald Trump was quick to accept the invitation – saying he would debate his rival anytime, any day.
Biden has deviated from the conventional timings, style and organisers.
The dates for the sparring match are so early, that neither candidate would have formally accepted their party’s nomination.
And there will be no live audience.
The two men are already exchanging insults on social media – building up an appetite for poll watchers.
So what are the key issues to look out for – if and when they face each other?
And how important are these debates?
Presenter: Elizabeth Puranam

Elaine Kamarck – Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and author.
Steve Herman – Chief National Correspondent at Voice of America and author.
