India’s Assam faces worst flood in decades, victims struggle to stay afloat
At least 66 people have died in landslides and floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam, following months of monsoon rains. Zamir Khan, a 42-year-old resident of Kaltali Village in Barpeta District, has been forced into a relief camp after his house was submerged. As a poor farmer, he lost his chilli plantation to the floods but managed to save some crops. Upon arrival at the camp with his family, they found no food or water and slept hungry. Now living in a tent, Khan and others in the camp drink river water to survive and call for government assistance to compensate for their lost crops and homes, as no aid has reached the area.
