Invasive fish species: ‘Blackchin Tilapia’ devastating Thailand fisheries
Baskets of Black Chinned Tilapia, pulled from ponds on Thailand’s eastern seaboard, highlight a severe alien invasion decimating local fisheries. Originally meant to be teeming with prawns, these waters are now overrun by the robust fish, native to western Africa, which has consumed all in its path. The tilapia’s spread is so extensive that it’s been found as far inland as the Myanmar border. The fisheries department is attempting to address the issue by buying back the invasive species, but the buy-back scheme, limited to one month, faces challenges as the fish have already established a strong presence in the wild. This situation has caused significant damage to local ecosystems and is considered a major crisis by experts.
