During their first publicly announced meeting since the Gaza war broke out on October 7, last year, Chinese diplomat Keijan Wang met with Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, in Qatar. Beijing expressed interest in maintaining ties with Hamas because it views the organization as an integral part of the Palestinian people. Haniyeh, for his part, commended China for its diplomatic role in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
