Kharkiv’s metro system transformed into schools as war threatens education above ground

Kharkiv’s metro system has become a safe haven for the city’s children amidst the threat of Russian airstrikes and shelling. With schools above ground under threat, the metro’s five stations now house purpose-built schools, providing children with a sense of safety and the opportunity to socialize with classmates and teachers. Counselors are assigned to each class to help children adapt, while teachers keep spirits high with games and activities. However, with the metro system at capacity, a new bunker school is being built outside the city to accommodate 400 students and staff for up to three weeks. While the subterranean existence is somewhat dystopian, it is the reality for Kharkiv’s children and parents as long as the threat from Russia remains. Rob McBride reports for Al Jazeera from Kharkiv, Ukraine.
