Mongolia heads to polls amid weak opposition, corruption scandals and public frustration

Mongolia is heading to the polls this week for the first time since its constitution was overhauled to broaden representation. Experts believe weak opposition to the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) will result in little change or serious measures to address recent corruption scandals. Despite reforms designed to increase the inclusion of smaller parties, public frustration remains high due to prominent corruption cases and a perceived lack of accountability. With no strong challenger, the MPP is expected to maintain its dominance, leaving many sceptical about the prospects for significant political change.

Al Jazeera’s Patrick Fok reports from the capital Ulaanbaatar.
