New highway, port, and housing projects threaten Maldives’ coral reefs

A controversial project to reclaim land is underway in the Maldives. It will create artificial islands using sand dredged from the ocean beds. The government there says it needed to boost tourism, but the United Nations says that after water, the most exploited substance in the world is sand.

The equivalent of a million trucks a day is being extracted from oceans and it’s devastating marine environments.
The government is caught between development and damaging the oceans.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng reports from the Maldives.
