South Africa’s ICJ case highlights global failure in Rwanda, warns against history repetition

South Africa has highlighted the Rwanda genocide during its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
It says the international community failed to prevent the atrocities from being committed back in 1994 and warns history should not be repeated.

Al Jazeera’s Victoria Gatenby reports.

Charles Petrie is Former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and United Nation’s Deputy Coordinator in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
He says it was the Security Council that failed Rwanda, they did this deliberately. The plane was shot down 2 weeks after the last American/UN troops left the shores of Mogadishu in total humiliation. There was no appetite to get involved in Rwanda. The US then said they would only intervene in foreign wars only for matters of US interest.
