Thai government in crisis amid fallout from PM’s leaked phone call
Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra faces mounting pressure to resign following the leak of a private audio call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. The controversy has sparked protests in Bangkok and led to a major coalition partner withdrawing support, leaving the government’s majority in a precarious position. The leaked conversation, in which Shinawatra refers to Hun Sen as ‘Uncle’ and appears to criticise the Thai military’s handling of a border dispute, has reignited tensions over long-standing territorial issues between Thailand and Cambodia. As demonstrators gather outside Government House and political analysts predict Shinawatra’s tenure may be short-lived, Thailand braces for potential political instability amidst economic challenges.
