Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men protest having to serve in Israeli military
Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men from Mea She’arim in West Jerusalem are protesting against conscription in the Israeli military. They prefer imprisonment over military service following the High Court’s decision to end their exemptions. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government, including his ultra-Orthodox coalition partners, faces backlash. The attorney general’s office has mandated that 3,000 Orthodox men be drafted immediately, losing eligibility for government grants. The ultra-Orthodox vow to continue protesting, which could destabilize Netanyahu’s government. This conscription issue has long divided Israeli society, with those serving in the military calling it unfair.
