UN chief condemns strike on Iranian consulate in Syria
Antonio Guterres’s spokesman says the UN secretary-general condemns the deadly attack on Iran’s consulate in Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Monday.
Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the UN chief “reaffirms that the principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected in all cases in accordance with international law”.
The statement also called for restraint and cautioned that “any miscalculation could lead to broader conflict in an already volatile region, with devastating consequences for civilians who are already seeing unprecedented suffering in Syria, Lebanon, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and the broader Middle East.”
As we reported earlier, Iran has pledged to punish Israel for the attack, which killed members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two generals.
