US Congress divided over Iran strikes as constitutional questions arise
Several resolutions are being planned in the United States Congress to reassert its constitutional authority over war-making powers, following President Trump’s recent bombing of Iran.
The measures come as lawmakers are divided on whether the US strikes constitute an act of war requiring congressional approval.
Republicans have largely praised the president’s actions, whilst some Democrats have criticised the unilateral decision to attack.
The debate highlights longstanding tensions between executive and legislative war powers, with critics arguing Trump has overstepped his authority.
However, the Republican leadership and much of the Democratic mainstream remain supportive of a hawkish stance towards Iran, complicating efforts to challenge the president’s military actions.
