US veto not off table as UN Security Council vote looms
The hold-up has quite frankly been the United States. The US is clearly not satisfied with the original draft resolution that was circulated on Friday, which called for a "cessation of hostilities." The wording was requested to be changed, and it was altered to "suspension of hostilities," indicating a less permanent term. Behind closed doors, it has been the US that is believed to have continued to request changes and modifications.
At some point, the other members of the Security Council, primarily the United Arab Emirates, which drafted and is essentially sponsoring this resolution, have to either agree to continue delays or not. It is now believed that there will be a vote within the next hour or two in the Security Council. At that point, the outcome will be revealed. However, it has been conveyed by two diplomatic sources that the US has not taken off the table the option to veto.
