Will UN Security Council finally vote on latest resolution?

The 15-member council was initially meant to vote on the new resolution – which aims to boost aid to Gaza – on Monday.

Delays have been daily since, with the initial drafter, the UAE, and other members apparently trying to wrangle US opposition to avoid another veto.

As one of five permanent members of the Security Council, the US – Israel’s closest ally – wields veto power.

Language in the draft was changed from initially calling for a “cessation” of hostilities to the softer “suspension” of hostilities, amid US pushback. The most recent hang-up appears to be over the details of creating a mechanism to oversee aid deliveries to Gaza.

The Security Council is meeting now, meaning a vote – or the announcement of yet another delay – could be imminent.
