#10: Maryland
Maryland, known as the Old Line State, faces severe waste management issues, particularly in Baltimore. Litter is a widespread problem, and its Solid Waste Bureau, led by John Chalmers, lacks the resources for effective cleanup. The state also grapples with landfill pollution, contributing significantly to its methane emissions.
In response to the environmental concerns, the EPA allocated $2.2 million in late 2020 to enhance water quality across Maryland. This funding aims to tackle nonpoint source pollution, which occurs when rain or snowmelt transports pollutants into the state’s rivers and streams.
